What am I eating?

Today we had lunch "catered" in.  The reason catered is in quotations is because really our secretary's mom made all of the food.  I'm not exactly sure why she did it, but it was so gracious.  She got up at 2am to start cooking.  We had rice, spicy squid, fried anchovies, and to take the spice away there was a boiled egg and cucumbers.  They were in styrofoam to-go containers just like you would get from a place catering (fancy).  The squid was good, but a little too spicy for my taste.  The anchovies were just little crunchy crisps.  I wasn't brave enough to try it without a spoon full of rice, but with the rice they were good.  I have never really considered myself a picky eater and I still don't, but I do feel it has been hard to step out of my box here.  I do a lot better when I'm not ordering or providing my own food.

For dessert there were several options.  They all have these little bite-size pastries that they keep on their desks alot.  They are kind of like if you get a box of chocolates you never know what you are gonna get.  Some have pineapple in them, some peanut butter, some have things I don't really like.  However, I tried these other things today that are shaped like round long pasta and have a sugar coating.  I fell in love.  So, I ask what are these called?  And I tell you they have no idea.  That has happened twice to me today.  We went over to our HR manager's house last week and she had a container of sweet wontons sitting on her patio table and I asked her this morning and she had no idea.  So, when I go to the store I am just going to try to describe what I am looking for.  It will go a little something like this:

1st treat from Rohani's house (our HR manager):
They are fried tortillas (I don't think they know the word tortilla by the way), but thicker.  It looks like they were rolled up and then spiraled around making them thicker than normal tortillas.  Then they are coated with a sugar topping.  Actually they kind of look like the flat pasta layered several times and wrapped around.  Kind of like this (the ones on the bottom ):

2nd treat from lunch today:
They are long and round with a hole in the center (like manicotti pasta).  They are very thin and crunchy with a sweet something sprinkled and possibly baked on the outside.  These look like the ones on top in the picture above, without the lines and add sparatic crunchy sweet chunks on them.

Do you think I can take the picture with me to the store??

Some people were able to tell me what they thought the 2nd treat was called.  I can't remember the word they used, but they said a.k.a. squid...hmmmm so squid is sweet?  No, that's just the word it translates to...I'm so confused and I'm sure you are too.

So, in conclusion I can go to the store and try to describe these two desserts (treats) that I enjoy very much, but I don't think I'm going to get very far.  I'll probably end up bringing some fishy squid home that I didn't even want.

Note to self:  Know the name of everything I serve to my guests especially if they are international guests ;)

Haha! I love it! What an experience! It's so funny how things get lost in translation.

Good luck girl! I wish I could be at the store with you while you are describing these things. I'm sure it would be a good laugh. Let us know if you find out what these things are called. Who serves food without knowing the name??
