The final product!

Here it is!!  My first diaper cake!!!

I just could not stop staring at it last night when we finished it!!  I loved that my grandmother was able to help because she has been too busy taking care of my granddaddy lately and hasn't had chance to be crafty. She is full of crafty knowledge and we had so much fun!!  Thanks Grandmother for helping me hook Benjamin (and Laura) up with some diapers in an awesome way!!!  Now, let's get that baby here!  I talked to Laura today (and Benjamin) and he is weighing about 2 pounds!  He is growing and I can't wait until he is here!  The shower is tomorrow so I'll be taking a break from all this crafty stuff :).  However, I love it, so we'll see how long that lasts.

Happy Crafting,

My First

So, remember when I thought I might get a little out of control?  Well, after posting that post I got the idea in my head to make a diaper cake.  I have never made a diaper cake so to you tube I went.  If you ever want to know how to do anything there's probably a you tube video for it.  Whenever anything in our house messes up, Gary heads to the computer to figure out the problem and fix it.  What did people do before you tube???  Anyway, back to the topic at hand.  I had heard that diaper cakes can be pretty expensive and since I have already spent a good penny on the nephew (he's worth more than money can buy, but I want to spoil him and Gary thinks I'm getting too much), I thought that other people might want to go in with me on this cake.  My friend Rachel hadn't bought her gift yet so she said she would love to help with the diaper cake!!  She already had the diapers and so she went to the store and got some little baby items to stuff in it.  I also googled pictures of diaper cakes to see what I wanted ours to look like (what did people do before google?).  I found some that I just loved and I found some that I didn't like at all.  So, I decided to incorporate a few different ones into mine.  My grandmother, my sister, and me had a good ole' time making this thing!

Now this isn't the finished product.  There are still a few other things I want to add, but we ran out of time last night.  Don't worry I'll post another one once it's finished.

Items used (so far):
100 size 1 diapers
a package of baby plasticware (included a fork and 2 spoons in 4 colors)
a multi colored rattle
3 multi colored teething rings
a decorative box from Hobby Lobby (I was going to get a cardboard cake tray, but they were just a couple dollars cheaper than this.  I'll keep this to use for my future diaper cakes!)
brown ribbon (used a little less than 5 yards.  Maybe even less than 4 yards, but I would get 5 just to be safe)
a wooden letter 'B'
brown paint
and lots of love!

I'm going to head to the store later today to get a few more little things and maybe stick the big 'b' out of the top and paint some letters spelling 'Benjamin' in blue and hot glue those to the second tier.  So, there's still a few things I need to do, but I thought I could show my progress thus far!

Let me know what you think!

Happy Diapering,
Kimberly

Blue-eyed Cicadas

Softball season is definitely a different ball game when you throw cicadas into the mix!  If you watch one of our entire games these days you will probably see me or my teammate and left center talking buddy running in the middle of a play trying to free ourselves from the chasing cicada.  However, last night as the topic of these disgusting creatures came up in the dug-out, one of our coaches/husband (not mine) mentioned that if you find a blue-eyed cicada vanderbilt will give you $5000 for it for research.  I have been soooo excited about that and have been telling everyone I know!!  However, as I was typing this post today I did a little of my own research and found this!  What a bummer!!!!!  So, now my goal is to stop this rumor so that people don't waste their time searching for the rare bug!  If you enjoy the cicada-ness of this year, check out this blog post!  Hilarious!!

Happy not searching for blue-eyed cicadas,
Kimberly

The almost finished product

Since I saw this picture last week I have been really excited to get home so I can make one.  I was a little nervous about it being really expensive because I had seen really pricey canvases before.  However, Hobby Lobby saves the day, once again.  You can get 2 canvases for $7.99!!!!  Anyway, so I went there yesterday and got all of the supplies and once I got home there was no stopping the creative magic that was happening.  Everytime Gary walked by I would ask him what he thought.  His answer, of course, was always the same, "Looks good!"  I had so much fun making it!  I was really sad when I was finished and had to put the paint away.  However, I think this might be my new favorite thing to make for baby showers (so friends get ready!!).

I was going to go ahead and put the date of the scheduled C-section, but it would have been my luck that he isn't born on that day, so I'll fill it in later.  Also, Melvin and Laura haven't decided on a middle name, so that too will be filled in later along with his weight.  I might add inches on the cloth as well and I think after the date I'm going to add the time.  I already have it wrapped up for her shower on Sunday, but I will have a black sharpie with me when he is born to fill in the empty spots.  I really think it turned out great.  I already had a lot of the supplies, so I think it ended up being about $15.  Oh and I have another canvas and all of the paints, so really it was that much for more than one!!!

I have all of her presents already wrapped and in the living room waiting for Sunday and I might just go check her registry again and grab a couple more things :).  This is already starting to get out of control!!

Happy Painting,
Kimberly
